We make cheese. And beer. We bake bread in our woodfired oven. We grow organic grass, milk cows and raise beef.
Bruny Island Cheese & Beer is not really like other businesses. What we make, how we make it and how we sell it is different. Some people call what we do ‘innovative’… but we just think it is quintessentially Tasmanian.
Bruny Island Cheese Co. was started in 2003 by Nick Haddow after he spent 10 years working with specialist cheese makers in many different countries around the world. Nick is a traditionalist, who recognises that great cheese was made for centuries before modern technology got involved. For us, cheese making is a pursuit of integrity, flavour and regional character. We also profoundly believe that cheese is a product of agriculture and therefore the ethical treatment of the land, the animals and their milk is paramount to its quality. Our small-scale, certified organic dairy farm in the Huon Valley has become a showcase for what great dairy farming looks like.
Nick’s passion for traditional produce with local character also led to the creation of Bruny Island Beer Co which makes a range of craft beers that take advantage of the outstanding quality hops, grains and water available in Tasmania.
Underpinning everything we do is passion for the connection we have with our consumers. Building strong relationships directly with the people who support us has become a vital component of how we do things.
