Our vineyard is at Saltwater River on the Tasman Peninsula. Overlooking picturesque landscapes, stunning seascapes, interesting built heritage and romantic convict era ruins, we planted the first hectare of Pinot Noir in December 2013. Since free settlement, the place had been producing fine wool and we were looking for alternatives to the poor returns on offer at the time. A trend towards dryer seasons over the previous 25 years meant that efficient use of available water was vital. We believed the place would be ideal for premium cool climate wine production and the Pinot was followed by Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gamay, and Shiraz plantings. We picked our first Pinot in 2018 and first Chardonnay in 2019. The quality of the fruit was excellent. Our aim is to produce exceptional wines, shaped by the place and the season. The wines James Broinowski has made for us are very exciting, reflecting the dry autumns, complex soils, long hours of sunshine and the cool summers that characterise the place.
