ON PREMISESONLINE

  • The centre is now open as of 17th June 2020

The St Helens History Room celebrates the history and culture of our unique and diverse area.  The St Helens History Room is part of the St Helens History and Visitor Information Centre located in St Helens on the East Coast of Tasmania.  Learn first hand about this interesting area before you set off to explore the beautiful beaches or the marvellous mountainous hinterland.  The museum displays more than 1000 artefacts spanning the various stages of settlement in the region  – a seamless walk through history!  ‘The Chinese Experience’ tells the story of the Chinese who once lived on the NE Tasmanian tin fields and an audio visual presentation relates one Chinese family’s history of that area.  You will also find out about the maritime history of the area, early settlement, natural history, early tin mining and the extensive ‘luni mapali’ Tasmanian Aboriginal stone tool collection.
